Congressional Briefing, “The Growing Homeless Crisis in America: Challenges and Solutions”

June 23, 2022 @ 9:00 am - October 28, 2022 @ 2:00 pm

This Congressional Briefing acts as a civil society “call to action” for Congress to take much needed federal legislative action to solve the homeless and affordable housing crisis. We must move beyond Tent cities, hotels, homeless shelters, cars, and couch surfing to a comprehensive and permanent solution to homelessness. Solutions must be based on proven best practices and affirm housing as a human and civil right; not a privilege. This can not be done without the passage of effective federal legislation with all deliberate speed.

For tens of thousands of people each year, homelessness is not a choice, but the result of structural barriers to affordable housing; including unemployment, low wages, insufficient safety net, health issues, barriers to private market housing, and the lack of federal investment in low-cost housing. Far too many women, children, families, teenagers, veterans, people with disabilities, and senior citizens are needlessly suffering. We will not become a moral nation unless housing is a human right for all.

At the Briefing, you will hear from Members of Congress who have introduced federal legislation that addresses the homelessness emergency, and nationally renowned end homelessness advocates and policy experts. The Bring America Home Now Campaign (BAHN) supports the immediate passage of Representative Maxine Waters’ Ending Homelessness Act H.R 4496, and the repeal of the Faircloth Amendment, which bans all new federal funding for public housing. BAHN also supports universal health-care, and jobs for all federal legislation. We look forward to seeing you at this very important Congressional Briefing!
